CELSIR Joins Global Leaders at the Launch of Global Freedom Consulting in Cape Town

From April 14–16, 2026, CELSIR participated in the Global Justice Convening and the launch of Global Freedom Consulting, hosted by the Incarceration Nations Network (INN) in Cape Town, South Africa. The convening brought together justice reform practitioners, policymakers, advocates, and lived-experience leaders from across the world to explore innovative approaches to justice reform, rehabilitation, and reintegration.

Representing Nigeria within a global community of changemakers, CELSIR contributed to important conversations on the future of justice systems and the urgent need for inclusive, people-centered solutions. Regional discussions among African participants highlighted shared challenges across the continent and emphasized the importance of developing African-led strategies that respond to local realities while strengthening collaboration across borders.

Throughout the convening, discussions focused on the transformative role of lived experience in shaping justice reform efforts. Speakers and practitioners from different countries demonstrated how formerly incarcerated individuals are leading impactful programs, influencing policy, and driving sustainable change within their communities. These conversations strongly aligned with CELSIR’s commitment to dignity, rehabilitation, and reintegration for justice-impacted individuals.

The official launch of Global Freedom Consulting further reinforced the growing international movement toward more restorative and humane justice systems. Sessions explored key themes including education as an alternative to incarceration, restorative justice, juvenile justice reform, legal empowerment, and gender-responsive approaches to rehabilitation.

One of the major highlights of the convening was a learning visit to Brandvlei Correctional Centre, where education and reintegration initiatives were showcased as powerful tools for transformation. Personal stories shared by justice-impacted scholars and advocates demonstrated the life-changing impact of access to education, mentorship, and long-term support systems.

For CELSIR, the convening served as an important opportunity to deepen global partnerships, exchange knowledge, and strengthen strategies that support reintegration in Nigeria. The experience reaffirmed the importance of holistic support systems that combine legal aid, psychosocial care, education, vocational opportunities, and post-release support in helping individuals rebuild their lives.

As CELSIR continues to expand its work within Nigeria and across international justice reform spaces, our participation at the Global Freedom Consulting Launch reflects our commitment to advancing innovative, inclusive, and human-centered approaches to justice reform. We remain committed to ensuring that justice-impacted individuals are not only supported but empowered to thrive and contribute meaningfully to society.
