CELSIR Commends Federal Government’s Approval of Medical Personnel Healthcare in Correctional Facilities

The Centre for Legal Support and Inmate Rehabilitation (CELSIR) welcomes the Federal Government’s approval for the employment of 50 medical doctors and 100 nurses across correctional centres in Nigeria. This decision will strengthen healthcare services within Nigeria’s correctional facilities.

For many years, correctional centres across the country have struggled with a severe shortage of medical personnel, leaving many inmates without adequate access to healthcare. The recruitment of additional doctors and nurses is therefore a critical intervention that acknowledges the government’s responsibility to ensure humane treatment and proper healthcare for individuals in custody.

As one of the leading organisations advocating for the rights of justice-impacted individuals in Nigeria, CELSIR has consistently championed reforms to improve the welfare, dignity, and rehabilitation of persons in correctional facilities. Through legal support, policy advocacy, health interventions, and reintegration programmes, the organisation continues to play a key role in advancing humane and people-centred correctional reforms.

Driven by its commitment to the well-being of justice-impacted individuals, CELSIR conducts medical outreach and health awareness programmes across correctional centres in Nigeria. Most recently, during the commemoration of World Social Justice Day, CELSIR extended this outreach to the Enugu Custodial Centre, further strengthening efforts to improve health outcomes and promote social justice within correctional facilities.

While the Federal Government’s approval of additional medical personnel is a welcome development, CELSIR encourages sustained investment in correctional healthcare systems. The timely deployment of the newly approved medical professionals, improved medical infrastructure, and the expansion of health programmes, including mental health services, will be essential to achieving meaningful and lasting reform within Nigeria’s correctional system.

CELSIR remains committed to strengthening advocacy, expanding rehabilitation initiatives, and promoting policies that uphold dignity, justice, and successful reintegration for justice-impacted individuals across Nigeria.
